The English and French are the two main protagonists in the debate over who invented the picnic or “le pique-nique”. The French first used ‘piquenique,’ meaning a potluck in the 1600s. The total feast is shared by everyone who contributed a dish. In the mid-17th century, the word picnic was translated into English with a broader meaning that included a casual outdoor meal.

It is clear that picnics would not be complete without cheese. Here are some suggestions for serving cheese during picnics. Also included are a few important criteria for the perfect outdoor meal.

Cheese

If the weather is nice,  then the intensity of sunlight at your picnic will influence what cheese you choose. If you don’t have a picnic basket with a cooling compartment like the 007 style, you will expose your cheeses to heat the moment you leave home. Camembert and Brie are two classic cheeses that picnickers love. They will ripen in the heat and ooze beautifully by the time your find a spot under the tree.

A good artisan cheese such as a West combe, or a Montgomery is perfect for a picnic. A good goat cheese will go well with fruit and other snacks.

Meats

The original reason for mediaeval-styles to eat outside was hunting. If you don’t feel like building a large fire and spit-roasting your quarry, then you could always take along an instant barbecue kit and sear some meats for chargrilled flavour barbecued tuna salad with gratin Mediaevals ate outdoors because they were hunting. If you don’t want to build a fire and roast your meat, you can take an instant barbecue kit with you and cook some meats on it for a chargrilled taste.

Bread and biscuits

The cheese is probably the most important part of your picnic. Why would you spend money and effort on meats and cheeses, if your biscuits or baguettes aren’t the best? We recommend P Etter’s Yard Artisan Crispbreads. Baguettes are also great for sharing, and getting the most from a wide variety of food items.

Location

We stare in amazement and awe at the families who decide that a layby on a three-lane highway is the perfect place for their picnic. How is this possible? It is impossible to avoid the many rural and urban oases in this country for an outdoor meal. Why not also have your picnic next to water.

Weather

Fundamental. A picnic without sun is worse than one without cheese. You cannot control the weather so your only choice in the case of an unfavorable climate is to postpone.

Do not forget the other picnic elements: the chutneys, the salads and the treats. As with the number of guests attending your picnic, the more you have the better!
